David Wilson
David Wilson, one of the artists who worked on This is Now, graduated from studying Illustration at the University of Brighton in July 2007. David is an illustrator/animator at heart, and specializes in producing labour-intensive hand drawn animations and card models.
We caught up with David to ask him about his background, his work and what This is Now means to him:
What does the ‘This is Now’ advert mean to you?
I think the great thing about this ad is the variety of great designers, photographers, illustrators, sculptors and artists that have come together to create a truely collaborative piece. So, “This Is Now” sums up the energy and excitement churned up by producing a collaborative piece, and the excitement of doing something so big.
Tell us about the piece of art you created for This is Now, and how you feels it relates to ‘now’?
I produced a series of card made models and hand drawn illustrations. I’ve been making card models for a while now, and card as a medium is very popular at the moment, so I was happy to create a few more for this job, but the work I was most excited about producing was the hand drawn animation. I’m really excited by unlimited possibilities in drawn animation, and wanted to created a series of visual treats, exploding with colour and life. I’m really inspired by the labour intensive, hand drawn animation and title sequences of TV shows in the 80s and early 90s – before computer generated animation had evolved enough to take over. There’s so much love that goes into drawing an animation frame by frame, I think it gives the end result so much more soul and personality. I think that represents “now” quite well – people like to see the hard work that’s gone into something and know that it’s not just been produced by a touch of a button on a computer.
