Forest of lights

What a fantastic interpretation of the modern urban space! I can imagine hundreds of scenarios to explain this picture. A shuttle could be flying away from the green landing pad at any time. I’m irremediably attracted to the little spot of red on the building’s facade. I can’t decipher what it is. Maybe it is an homage to the wonderful opening of Blade Runner in which giant flames of exhaust gasses belch out of oil refinery towers in the smoky megalopolis and are reflected in the gaze of the onlooker…

If you want to read more about Blade Runner, Manuel and Filippo have written beautiful articles about it a few months ago on the This is Now blog.

Time made of water

26th March 2009 by Manuel

As difficult as catching a cloud, as easy as telling our name, ‘now’ is something so brief, and at the same time, so tangible and real in our lifes, that we live in the paradox of going through it and leaving it behind. Those are supreme moments, keys elements of our lifes, which, however, are left behind, without the possibility of preventing it.

In the first place, I thought about putting together this fleeting ‘now’ with the slow passing of time which appeared in the film ‘The Remains of the Day’. But a few minutes later, one scene caught my attention: Rutger Hauer in ‘Blade Runner‘, talking about wonders he had seen and enjoyed. “And all those moments will disappear, like tears in the rain”:

That’s the meaning of ‘now’. Wonderful moments which slip between our fingers like the water flow. Unique, unforgettable, and unrecoverable.

The Last Now

25th March 2009 by Filippo Magnifico

Speaking of ‘now’ is not easy.

This is because we are faced with a term whose meaning is not so much elusive for his abstract, but because it deals with facts, situations, moments associated with the past.

Is Panta Rei (everything is in movement) the best description?

Everything just flows, nothing stays the same. Everything is subject to the inexorable laws of the time.
Try to dwell on this moment, concentrate.

Done?

It has already passed.
‘now’ became Past.

Reaching a hasty conclusion, therefore, one might say that any contemporary (I mean in the literal meaning of the term) does not exist because there is a time that precedes it.

The result, sad but inevitable, that is the only true now is that requiring the absence of a subsequent temporality.

Just to rejoice a little, know that that moment is indeed the last of life, that the extreme of awareness.

Cinema in the reflections on death and on the so many so-called Famous Last Words.

Among the most famous quotes could be ‘time to die!’ that concludes the wonderful monologue of the replicant Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner, a milestone in the history of cinema.

However, for me, the more significant last words that the big screen has been able to give us is of another kind, that of Rosabella (Rosebud in the original version) delivered by Orson Welles Citizen Kane’s opening of the beautiful Fourth Power.

A simple name followed by a ball of glass that shatters on the floor.

The meaning of now is all there, in a puff of voice that, while being at the death of a character, opens the way for an entire story.

Because nobody has ever said that the time someone has to represent is the end of everything.

Look the same for Orson Welles.

For him, that word has been an incredible reversal (not only positive, unfortunately).

Look at the history of Cinema.

From that moment it has not been the same.

Tutto scorre appunto, niente rimane uguale.
