A movie present

At the moment a great number of movie shots that symbolize allegorically the idea of ‘now’ are going through my mind. The most prominent one right now is the smile of Whoopi Goldberg in The Color Purple, when she is, even without knowing it, preparing to welcome her sister recently arrived from Africa. Her unmeasured smile expresses the keen desire to live intensely a present driven by an excessive feeling of happiness, which bury past pains, a present which never reaches absolute happiness, just moments of emotional turmoil along with her friend and lover, Margaret Avery. I know it’s not a new movie, but it describes a timeless faith, the expression of a universal feeling, of a centuries-old desire: an encounter with happiness, a taste of glory.

In 1999, I graduated with a BA in History. After a period of time when my life was full of improvisations, I had the idea of undertaking a project based on the didactic application of cinema for teaching and learning History. During the training in which I enrolled, I had the privilege of flirting with fantasy & imagination. I alternated between fiction and reality, in a society that doesn’t support enchantment, but only a sort of imperious rationalism imposed by the survival instinct. However, I have gained a perspective of past and present much higher than some of my peers. I am aware of the past and the present. And in the end, I think that past, present and future are living in ourselves and it makes us feel the present moment more intensely.

En estos días, han desfilado por mi mente un sinnúmero de fotogramas cinematográficos que simbolizan alegóricamente la idea del momento presente, del ahora. La que más late en mi mente ahora es la sonrisa de Whoopi Goldberg en El color púrpura (The Color Purple), cuando, aún sin saberlo, se dispone a dar la bienvenida a su hermana recién llegada de África. Su inconmensurable sonrisa expresa intensamente el deseo de vivir un presente presidido por una pletórica sensación de felicidad, que sepulta el dolor del ayer, del momento pasado, durante el que nunca acarició la felicidad absoluta, sino tan sólo, momentos de efervescencia emocional junto a su amiga y amante, Margaret Avery. Sé que no es una película nueva, pero, a fe que es intemporal, es la expresión de un sentimiento universal, de un deseo secular: el encuentro de la felicidad, el sabor de la gloria.

En 1999, obtuve la licenciatura de Historia. Tras un período de tiempo en el que mi vida estuvo presidida por la improvisación, concebí la idea de emprender un proyecto basado en la aplicación didáctica del Cine para la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de la Historia. Durante el proceso de aprendizaje en el que me enrolé, tuve el privilegio de coquetear con la fantasía, con la imaginación que emana de la creatividad. He alternado realidad con ficción, en una sociedad que no admite el embelesamiento, sino tan sólo, una suerte de racionalismo imperativo impuesto por el instinto de supervivencia. Sin embargo, he adquirido una perspectiva del pasado y del presente mucho mayores que algunos de mis congéneres. Tengo conciencia del ayer y del hoy. Y ahora digo que todo tiempo subyace en nosotros para vivir con más intensidad el momento presente.
