Open your ears, This is Now
What can describe the term ‘now’ in the musical world? That’s a good question Violette asked me. I took a moment to think about some fresh and good vibrations that represent my defintion of ‘now’.
First, let’s begin with some deep soul music with the princess Erykah Badu. Her last album, “New Amerykah Part One (4th World War)” is an awesome masterpiece and this live version of “The Healer”, produced by the legendary Madlib, shows the beauty of a ‘now’ soul.
In 2008, we had MGMT. Now, in 2009, we will have Empire of the Sun. Unless you don’t read blogs or watch TV, you can’t tell me that you don’t know these 2 Australians boys. Nick Littlmore (member of PNAU) and Luke Steele (of Sleepy Jackson) linked their skills to catch the perfect pop melodies of 2009 and released at the end of last year, “Walking on a dream”. Here is the song also called “Walking on a dream”.
“Jazz is a music for elder people” … maybe, you’ve already heard this kind of talk. I’m pretty sure I’ll contradict that with this live video of “Park bench people” starring the shining star of jazz, Jose James and his Japanese friends of Soil & Pimp Sessions.
In France, we are lucky to have an important electronic scene. Nil is one of those crazy beatmakers that delivers nice productions. I discovered him with the fabulous electronica song, “Ma Disconica”, I definitively fell in love with its works when he remixed it with a special machine called Monome.
Last but not least … what is a better symbol of ‘now’ than an eternal icon ? I chose to conclude this post with the legendary Q-Tip. In more than 20 years, he made an impressive path in the rap game with A Tribe Called Quest from the end of the 80’s to 1998. After some difficulties with majors, he was crowned by the critics with his last album, “The Renaissance”. Big up for Q-Tip !
